If you have carpet or rugs in your home, you know they can go from bright and soft to rough and dingy if they aren’t cared for regularly. One day your carpet is looking brand new and the next thing you know, it starts to look like a parade has trampled through your living room!

It’s easy for other household chores to take precedence over cleaning your carpets and rugs, as it’s not the most exciting task to complete. Luckily there are a few easy ways to keep them in great shape.

Vacuum Regularly

Vacuuming your carpet and rugs regularly is one of the easiest things you can do to maintain them. Typically once per week will do the trick, but high-traffic areas need a little more love. For those areas, we recommend vacuuming two times a week to get any extra dirt pulled up from the fibers.

You might not realize it, but there is a proper way to vacuum. Follow these tips to employ a vacuuming technique that allows you to reach all embedded grime!

  • Start by vacuuming the carpeted area or rug horizontally and then switch to vacuuming vertically to reach any hidden dirt.
  • Remember to take your time so you don’t miss any areas.
  • Adjust your vacuum setting for the correct pile height of your carpet or rug.
  • Empty your canister frequently so your vacuum doesn’t lose suction power.

Clean Spills ASAP

No one is perfect, so spills are going to happen, and when they do– don’t panic! No matter what was spilled, you’ll want to clean it immediately. Grab a clean rag or towel and make sure to dab rather than scrub. Scrubbing will only make it worse by causing a stain or damaging carpet or rug fibers.

Another tip is to make sure you know what your rug is made of. Different materials require different care and cleaning products, and using the wrong one can cause irreparable damage. Remember, the faster you are able to clean a spill, the less likely it is to stain!

Add Layers for Protection

Layering a rug on top of your carpet, especially in high-traffic areas, can do wonders for maintaining your carpet. Adding a rug not only spices up your home with texture and color, but it serves as a barrier against everyday wear and tear.

If it’s a rug that you’re trying to maintain, placing a pad underneath it offers some extra protection and cushion. With a rug pad layered securely under your rug, you also prevent unnecessary damage by reducing the risk of someone tripping or sliding on the rug.

Remove Your Shoes at Home

Another way to maintain and prolong the life of your carpet or rug is to keep your outdoor shoes out of your indoor spaces. When you walk on your carpet and rugs while wearing your outdoor shoes, you are grinding all dirt into the material, which makes it difficult to remove.

Additionally, outdoor shoes can be very abrasive and harsh to the fibers and can cause them to break down quickly. If you are someone who needs to wear shoes inside, that’s absolutely understandable. Try to dedicate a pair or two that have softer soles to being your indoor shoes and make sure to keep up with your vacuuming schedule.
